Geography

Kerala’s Palakkad district’s western border is home to Kappur Grama Panchayat, which geographically falls within the midland region. It is located at latitude 10.7715° N and longitude 76.0653° E. Of the Panchayat’s total land area, 10% consists of hilltop plains, 30% sloping land, 35% plain land, and 25% paddy fields. Most of the paddy fields are double-crop wetlands.

The major crops cultivated in the Panchayat are paddy, coconut, banana, arecanut, pepper, and tapioca. There are 24 ponds and 10 streams that serve as the primary water sources for agriculture in the Panchayat. Most farmers depend on rainfall for cultivation. The absence of irrigation projects and large-scale water supply schemes for agriculture causes considerable hardship for farmers. These limitations significantly affect agricultural production, and even minor climatic variations directly impact the farming community. About one-third of the Panchayat’s population depends on the agricultural sector for their livelihood.

Kappur Grama Panchayat is situated in the Thrithala Block Panchayat of Pattambi Taluk in Palakkad district. Spread across Kappur village, the Panchayat has an area of 23.52 square kilometers. It is bordered by Anakkara Grama Panchayat to the north; Pattithara Grama Panchayat and Chalissery Grama Panchayat to the east; and Anakkara Grama Panchayat, Alamkode Grama Panchayat, and Vattamkulam Grama Panchayat to the south.

Based on its geographical features, the Panchayat can be classified into four categories: hilltop plains, sloping regions, plains, and paddy fields. Coconut is the main crop cultivated in the sloping areas, with pepper and limited rubber cultivation as intercrops. Most paddy fields are double-crop wetlands. In the plain regions, arecanut and coconut are widely cultivated, along with intercrops such as banana, tuber crops, pepper, and vegetables.
